Meet the Monarch Butterfly
The Monarch Butterfly is one of the most well-known and loved butterflies in North America! These bright orange and black butterflies are famous for their incredible migration—traveling thousands of miles from the U.S. and Canada all the way to Mexico every year.
Interesting Facts:
- Monarchs can fly up to 100 miles in a single day!
- Their wings have tiny scales that give them their bright colors.
- They use the sun and Earth’s magnetic field to find their way during migration!
Monarch Butterflies are important pollinators and help flowers grow by spreading pollen as they feed. But their numbers are shrinking due to habitat loss and climate change. Learning about them is the first step to helping them thrive!
Helping Monarchs Around the World
Monarch Butterflies travel thousands of miles during their yearly migration, and people all over North America are working together to help them on their journey! Scientists track their migration using butterfly tags and special maps to learn where they go and how to protect their habitats.
Conservation groups, schools, and everyday families plant milkweed and wildflowers to give Monarchs safe places to lay eggs and feed. In Mexico, people protect the forests where Monarchs spend the winter. By working together across countries, we can keep the Monarch’s incredible journey going for years to come!
