The genesis of the green heron bas-relief was seeing a perfect outline of a heron's graceful neck in the stone.
From the artist, Dale Weiler: Ultimately, the stone's dimensions determined which heron would emerge from that graceful neck. It was to be a green heron.
To complement the heron’s head and neck, I initially observed in the steatite, I uncovered some cat tails and reeds that it nestled into. The varying shades of grey to black in the stone soften the feel of the piece and give it a mystical air.
And lastly, I chose this particular piece of alabaster for the base because its coloration captures many of those found in the green heron.
