American Red Wolf

Meet the American Red Wolf

The American Red Wolf is one of the rarest animals in the world—and also one of the most important! These wild canines are native to the southeastern U.S. and now live in protected areas in North Carolina.

Interesting Facts:
  • Red wolves can run up to 30 miles per hour!
  • They live in groups called family units.
  • Each one has a unique howl!

Red wolves help keep nature in balance by controlling animal populations. With fewer than 25 left in the wild, protecting them is super important. Let’s find out how we can help!

Red Wolves in Human Care

The Red Wolf Recovery Program is a special effort to save the American Red Wolf from extinction. Started by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the program works with zoos and wildlife centers to care for Red Wolves and help them have healthy pups.

These wolves are part of a breeding program that helps grow their numbers. Some Red Wolves from the program are released into protected wild areas to help rebuild the wild population. Thanks to the Red Wolf Recovery Program, there’s hope for giving this rare animal a second chance!
