Bird Art: Hunkered In

The beautiful shorebirds that you watch moving in unison with the ebb and flow of the ocean are under major pressure from habitat loss and environmental pollution. Their nesting grounds are being continually reduced by coastline development.

I was inspired to create Hunkered In after seeing two lesser yellow leg shorebirds nestled up against a conch shell on a lonely stretch of North Carolina beach. The serenity of these two birds touched my soul. The stone that I chose to create the piece was perfect. The coloration and texturing in the stone varied throughout the piece, creating noticeable variations in each of the shorebirds (just as it is in nature).
